1 – HOW TO MOVE AROUND WITH THE METRO?
The Paris Metro is not just a convenient mode of transportation; it’s an experience in itself. Here are some compelling reasons to opt for the metro:
- Extensive Coverage: The Paris Metro is a vast network that crisscrosses the entire city, making it the ideal choice for getting around quickly and efficiently.
- Cost-Effective: The metro is one of the most budget-friendly ways to explore Paris, especially when compared to taxis or rideshare services.
- Avoid Traffic: Paris is known for its traffic jams, especially during rush hours. Using the metro can save you time and stress.
- Discover Local Life: Riding the metro gives you a glimpse into the daily life of Parisians. You can observe the hustle and bustle, and even engage in some people-watching.
One thing to keep in mind though is that the metro is full of pickpockets – so once you have your stuff safely in front of you you will be fine.
Many of the pickpockets are sometimes unassuming young kids and girls in gangs.
Understanding the Paris Metro System
1. Navigating the Lines
The Paris Metro system is composed of 14 lines, each marked with a specific color. To find your way, take note of your destination’s nearest metro station and the color of the line you need to take. For instance, Line 1 (yellow) is one of the most important lines, connecting famous attractions like the Louvre, Champs-Élysées, and the Eiffel Tower.
You can buy tickets from a ticket counter or simply choose your language at the ticket machines and follow the instructions.
2. Tickets and Passes
- Single Tickets: A single-use ticket, known as a “t+ ticket,” allows you to travel on the metro for a single journey. Keep in mind that the metro operates on a zone system, so choose the appropriate ticket for your intended destination.
- They are slowly rolling out the paper single-use tickets – to be fully gone by 2024.
- To go to Versailles it’s more than a regular ticket, so instead of 1.80 euros its’ 5 euros and same for Disneyland Paris around 5 euros one way from Paris.
- Paris Visite Card: For unlimited travel within Paris, consider the Paris Visite Card. This card is available for 1, 2, 3, or 5 days and provides unlimited access to the metro, buses, and trams within the selected zones.
- Navigo Card: If you plan to stay in Paris for an extended period, the Navigo Card can be a cost-effective option. It offers unlimited travel within specific zones for a week or a month. This card requires a passport-sized photo.
3. Using the Metro
Here’s a step-by-step guide on how to use the Paris Metro:
- Determine Your Destination: Know the name of the station closest to your destination and the corresponding metro line. The best advise I like to give is to look on Google Maps for the best metro stop closets to your designated location.
- Locate the Nearest Station: Paris is dotted with metro stations. Find the one nearest to you, and check the metro map to ensure you’re heading in the right direction.
- Purchase a Ticket: If you’re using a single ticket, insert it into the turnstile, and retrieve it on the other side. For cards like Paris Visite or Navigo, simply tap them on the designated area.
- Boarding the Train: Wait on the platform for the correct train, indicated by its line number and direction. Be sure to stand behind the yellow line for safety.
- Some doors will open automatically – others will not and you will need to turn the turnstile or push a button.
- Exiting the Metro: When you reach your destination, follow the signs to the exit “SORTIE” in French. Many stations have multiple exits, so use the Google map to ensure you leave at the right one.
- Keep Your Ticket: Hold on to your ticket until you’ve fully exited the station. Metro staff may check for valid tickets within the station. If you are without your ticket inside the metro they will charge you a 45 euros fee in addition to what you already paid!
2 – CHOOSING THE PERFECT NEIGHBOURHOOD
For first-time travelers, I recommend the following neighborhoods as your prime options:
1. Le Marais
The Bohemian Gem of Paris
Le Marais, nestled in the 4th arrondissement, is a charming neighborhood that strikes the perfect balance between the old and the new. 3 – A DAILY ITINERARY GUIDE for 3 to 4 DAYS
