So fast so good with Lufthansa Cargo

Guys, I’m back! I’m so honored to have been invited by Lufthansa Cargo to learn about their perishable center in Frankfurt Germany last week, with some of the world’s top food & lifestyle bloggers.

Frankfurt being a temporary home here in Europe for many fruits and vegetables, meats, fish, and flowers before they arrive at boutiques, supermarkets, and most importantly your table…
How many times have you considered what it must be like for your flowers coming from Kenya or your berries from Mexico? Never, probably!
Our fast food culture has gotten a bad rep over the years. I mean, let’s be honest, when we think “fast” we think about some of the more corporate food chains, not about the voyage that produce takes from farm to table.
Lufthansa Cargo is one of the companies that is responsible for the safe transport of what we consume. Within the perishable center, everything is tested by food scientists and kept at the best temperatures to ensure nothing is unhygienic. Changing things, making fast not such a dirty word.
It was an eye-opener to see everything first hand, and being passionate about food and sustainability, I was in food (warehouse) heaven. It was particularly interesting to talk candidly with the knowledgeable (and funny) team at the perishable center, sharing their insights of not just produce origins but information on changing trends and market usage. Like how seasonality of local produce respects the environment, and that eating local is another way to be more responsible.
But that some people are used to just having food when we want it, so supermarkets will still supply some out-of-season produce. For many, the whole concept of seasonality is new – or unheard of. How can we have strawberries in the wintertime? Well, because we’re getting them from sunny Cairo.
The afternoon finished with a tasting of these international flavors (I’m especially fond of the Coconut pumpkin soup that I’ll be replicating back here in Paris!) with :
