Paris Guide: Tipping in restaurants

Tipping customs vary from country to country, and it’s important to be aware of local customs and expectations when dining out. In Paris, France, tipping is a common practice, but it’s not as customary as it is in other countries such as the United States. Here’s a guide to tipping in restaurants in Paris, France.

First and foremost, it’s important to note that a service charge is typically included in the bill. This is known as “service compris” and is often around 15% of the total bill. As such, it’s not necessary to leave an additional tip unless you received exceptional service.

If you do wish to leave a tip, it’s customary to round up the total bill to the nearest euro or leave a few euros as a gratuity. For example, if your bill is 28 euros, you might leave 30 euros or 32 euros as a tip.

It’s also worth noting that in France, servers are paid a living wage and are not reliant on tips for their income. As such, tipping is seen more as a gesture of appreciation for good service rather than a necessary part of a server’s income.

In terms of payment, it’s common to pay for your meal at the end of the meal, rather than asking for the bill to be brought to you. Simply ask for “l’addition” when you’re ready to pay. Many restaurants in Paris now accept credit cards, but it’s always worth carrying some cash in case a restaurant only accepts cash payments.

It’s also worth noting that there are some instances where tipping is not necessary or expected. For example, if you’re just grabbing a quick coffee or pastry at a cafe, it’s not customary to leave a tip. Additionally, if you receive poor service, it’s not necessary to leave a tip.

In summary, tipping in restaurants in Paris, France is not as customary as it is in other countries, but it’s still a common practice. A service charge is typically included in the bill, and it’s not necessary to leave an additional tip unless you received exceptional service. If you do choose to leave a tip, rounding up to the nearest euro or leaving a few euros is customary. Remember that tipping is seen more as a gesture of appreciation rather than a necessary part of a server’s income, and it’s not always necessary or expected.
