Arc de Triomphe, Wrapped by Christo and Jeanne-Claude.
If you are coming to Paris to see L’Arc de Triomphe, Wrapped (Project for Paris, Place de l’Étoile – Charles de Gaulle), a temporary work of art from Saturday, September 18 to Sunday, October 3, 2021.
Here’s what you need to know and my first impressions from yesterday’s Press viewing.
In the presence of the Ministry of culture, Roselyne Bachelot-Narquin, the Mayor of Paris, Anne Hidalgo, the CMN President, Philippe Bélaval, and the director of the project, Vladimir Yavachev ) a group of us were privy to a Q+A session and the first tour going up in wrapped monument.
I learned that per Christo’s wishes, the project will be completed by his team in partnership with the Centre des Monuments Nationaux (CMN), the government institution that manages the Arc de Triomphe. Madame Bachelot-Narquin joked how it was so administratively quick to get the authorization to carry out the project. Madame Hidalgo was happy to make the space around the artwork, car-free and rebutted journalist comments that this is not the way it was done in 1985 when the Pont Neuf bridge was wrapped, to which she eloquently replied “that was another time, and we are reflecting the progress of our time”
His nephew had a warm personality and made all effort to make sure that no one from the team was left out. He brought a massive group of them on stage to thank them.
Going over to the monument, the closer you get the more it takes on another dimension and you start to see that it’s so much more than what you can see in the photos. It’s actually not a thin type of fabric at all!
The good news is it will all be recycled.
